Summary

In this episode, we explore the alluring and often overwhelming desire to do it all. We start by acknowledging that we all have the capability to do anything we set our minds to, but being capable and being good are two different things. We often find ourselves envious of others who excel in a particular task or craft, which can send us down a rabbit hole of excitement and inspiration, only to lose interest when the next shiny thing comes along.

So why does this happen? Where does our need to constantly do more come from? We delve into how societal pressure to be productive and constantly improving can contribute to this cycle, but we also recognize the importance of pursuing things we're interested in and finding what we love. However, it's crucial to understand the difference between being interested in something and it being for us.

I'm at least felt like I was capable of doing everything I wanted.

And not to sound cocky, I think this is probably true for everyone, but I am capable of doing everything that I want to do no matter what

0:16.6

skill it might be I still think that that's true but something that growing up has led to is the

0:26.9

realization that there's a huge massive difference between being capable and

0:31.6

being good of doing good, of being capable of doing something and gaining the skill

0:39.9

and actually being capable of becoming a really high performer in that space or one of the best

0:49.2

in that field and that crap. Something that I think probably everyone listening to this could can relate to,

1:10.0

I find myself seeing others performing at a high level at a task, something like drawing or painting or music or other forms of art or coding or design, whatever it might be.

1:26.3

I see others performing at a really, really high level and I just like see myself drawn to them so deeply drawn to the idea of doing this thing so deeply so deeply so like fully that I have to I have to try have to dive down the rabbit hole

1:47.2

give it a shot and see if this is something I can perform at and I'm usually really

1:52.3

excited by this I'm usually really excited by this. I'm usually really excited by the

1:56.8

process of learning this new skill and figuring out what I can do with it and

2:02.3

where the boundaries are and just diving into it.

2:06.1

But the cycle is always the same because eventually I lose interest.

2:11.3

I lose interest and then I see the next craft or thing that I'm really attracted to and I feel the same level of being drawn to it and I just kind of stop doing the last thing.

2:25.0

Maybe I've gotten pretty decent at it,

2:27.5

maybe I've gotten better than average at it.

2:29.4

It becomes another skill that I know I can deploy if needed.

2:34.4

It becomes something that I better understand about the world

2:37.6

and can pull on for future projects.

2:40.7

But I pretty much never revisit it as like a thing I'm going to pursue.

2:47.0

And I find myself wondering why does this happen?
