Hello, I'm Eddie Mayor and this is the Grenfell Tower Inquiry podcast, reporting every day the inquiry sits.

The inquiry heard today from Marcia Gomez, who lived in flat 183 on the 21st floor,

with his wife, Andrea Perestrello, who was seven months pregnant, and their two daughters.

During Marcia Gomez's evidence, a 999 call he made was played.

It was his fifth 999 call, and was made as he and his family tried to escape from the tower around 3.30.

With them was their neighbour, Helen Gebremescal and her daughter.

They were sheltering in Marcia Gomez's flat.

The inquiry has played the audio of only one 999 call before,

preferring instead to use transcripts of calls.

Lead counsel to the inquiry Richard Millett explained why they wanted this one to be heard.

The reason for playing it is so as to enable us to ask particular questions of him, which do not immediately appear evident on the transcript.

In parts, it is an extremely distressing thing to listen to.

So those who don't think they are able to listen to it, and it is distressing

in parts, should make it take the opportunity not to listen to it or to come back into the room

or to observe the live stream. Once the questions are finished, then those who have left the

room or got away from the live stream will be invited to come back and join us.

In his written statement, Marcia Gomez said he wanted the entirety of the audio to be played in public.

This evidence gave a unique insight into the conditions in the stairwell of Grenfell.
