The Shadow, the mysterious character who furthers the forces of law and order, is in reality

Lamont Cranston, wealthy young man about town.

The Shadow uses his hypnotic power to cloud men's minds so they cannot see him.

Cranston's friend and companion, the lovely Margot Lane,

is the only person who knows to whom the unseen voice of the shadow belongs.

As the scene opens in our story, it is night, dark, still nice.

Now, we find ourselves the unseen observers of two vague figures,

moving almost silently across a window sill

and into a darkened bedroom, where lies asleep a beautiful girl at peace with the world.
