Summary

This will not shock you.  I am a talker.   As an extrovert with ADHD who has 1 million opinions and a good story to go with any situation, I’m never at a loss for words. Perhaps this is how we arrived at 858 podcast episodes!   I’m also aware that if I want to show up as the best version of myself I have to really practice being a good listener. Given my propensity toward nosiness, sometimes listening comes easy. However, in a heated discussion or a lively room, I want to say all the things. And, I’m aware that sometimes this can leave others feeling unseen or unheard.   As my child has developed my propensity for words (all the words, all the time), I have become increasingly aware that listening is something that must be practiced. For us talkers, listening doesn’t come naturally - or easily!  Being a great listener shows consideration, care, kindness, and empathy. These are all very important to me. So, I’m invested in doing a better joy to listen to understand versus listening to reply. There is a big difference.   Over the last few years, I’ve been paying attention to how some of the best communicators around me listen. I’ve been taking notes. In this episode, I’ll share the listening skills I have observed and am working on developing. If you’re a better talker than a listener, this one’s for you!  We love the sponsors that make this show possible! Hello, Shameless moms. Happy Monday if you're listening in live time. So we're talking today

0:59.1

about how to be a better listener if you're a talker. And this is a little ironic because I definitely

1:04.4

identify as a talker. You don't have 858 podcast episodes if you're not a talker. So I definitely

1:10.6

identify as a talker, but I wanted to do

1:12.7

this episode because one of the things I know about myself about being a talker is that listening

1:18.8

is really hard for me, but I love being in conversation with people and I love listening.

1:24.3

Like a huge part of what I do for my work is listening. When I'm coaching people,

1:27.8

listening is my most critical skill. And so I also have to be aware as someone who loves to talk

1:35.6

and is super extroverted in multiple ways, I have to be really aware of matching my talking,

1:47.7

like my quantity of talking with my quantity of listening.

1:52.5

If not, even trying to be more of a listener than talker in a lot of situations.

1:54.9

And this is a challenge for me for sure.
