My name is Joelle Castex and I am an author and speaker and I'm one of the leading advocates for adult victims of child sexual abuse, mostly with an institutions like the Catholic Church.

Well, thank you very much, Joel, for coming on Real Crime Profile. We really appreciate it. And thank you even more for being an advocate for victims of child sexual victimization.

And we just finished talking about the second episode of the Keepers on Netflix. Have you seen that series?

Yes, I have and I know a lot of the people who are involved in it.

And the keepers is basically what I do. I'm a survivor of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.

So what I do is very much like what the women who were trying to figure out what happened to sister Kathy have done except what I do is in a much larger scale and much more deeply involved in this civil justice system.

Well, that's great. And believe me, we're going to have a lot of questions for you about that.

And just so we can put this into context, the John Jay Catholic Church priest abuse study covered the time period between 1950 and 2000.

And they identified roughly 3000 priest offenders and over 10,000 child victims during that time period.

They discovered that the average delay in reporting by a child was 20 years and that 25% delayed after 30 years delayed disclosure until 30 years after the offense.
