Hello everyone and welcome back to the History of England, episode 83 crisis.

So at the end of the 1296, Edward was gearing up for war again.

In France, things finally seemed to be going his way, Edward had shout out fast quantities

of cash for allies with little result.

But now that Flores of Holland was dead, possibly at English instigation, the new counter

of Holland was enticed into the English camp through the offer of a royal princess, Elizabeth,

which is nice, isn't it?

Sorry about killing a dad and all, but look, here's a nice princess.

After while Edward was gearing up for yet more war, everyone else was knackered.

At a parliament in November, they'd voted one more tax at the much lower rate of a 12th.

But the Archbishop of Canterbury and the church had stalled, since Pope Boniface was telling

them that no taxes could be paid to lay rulers without his personal consent.

And meanwhile, Edward's victories in Scotland had cost him vast amounts of money, so he still

needed more.

All that Edward could see was the need to attack France in defence of Gascony, and therefore

he just didn't see the storm heading his way.

The first shot was fired in January 1297.

Robert Winchelsey, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said no to any more taxation.

Edward was livid, and went into a good old plantagenet rage.

He outlawed the clergy, so that again, he outlawed the entire clergy of England.
