Summary

Hi beauties!

On this week's Five Minute Friday, I talk to you about tanning beds and the risk that comes with them! As a facial plastic surgeon, I know a thing or two about the negative effects tanning can have on your skin. More than a million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year and 90 % of those cases can be brought on by sun exposure and tanning beds. With prom season rapidly approaching and many brides getting ready to tie the knot, a "base tan" is more often than not on their checklist. I cover some of the different types of skin cancer, why tanning beds are your skin's worst enemy, and some of the ways you can shield yourself from the sun!

Well, hello, hello, and you're listening to Beauty Bites with Dr. Kay, Secrets of a Plastic Surgeon,

0:19.3

and today it's time for a five-minute Friday.

0:22.4

Today on the podcast, let's talk all about why I'm doing the podcast with such a bad cold

0:28.2

and allergies because I'm in Washington, D.C., visiting my kids in Georgetown.

0:34.6

But I wanted to be sure to put out a five minute Friday just to talk about all the

0:38.5

reasons you guys need to be careful to avoid tanning beds this prom season and this spring break

0:45.2

season. So what are the top reasons to avoid tanning beds during the spring season? I hear from

0:52.8

lots of my patients that they want to use tanning beds in order

0:55.8

to create a little base tan because, you know, your outfit looks better, your bathing suit looks

1:01.3

better, you get a little base tan, maybe you don't burn at the beach. Well, that is absolutely not

1:07.7

acceptable. So there's no such thing as a base tan, and there's no such thing as a safe,

1:12.8

low level of tanning in a tanning bed that gives you a low-grade tan so you don't burn. This is really

1:19.5

just a sales tactic that's designed by tanning salons to make more money, and it leaves you

1:25.2

unprotected. And remember that tanning beds are a very real

1:29.0

problem. They are definite cancer causers. So don't buy that sales pitch when you hear the

1:35.9

people say they need a base tan. It means you're just doing your first layer of sun damage,

1:41.0

ultraviolet damage and DNA damage to your skin. The controlled low-grade

1:47.1

tanning is not better. Remember that the American Academy of Dermatology research shows that indoor

1:54.7

tanning before the age of 35 increases your risk of developing melanoma by 60%.

2:01.6

And this increases every time you visit a tanning bed.

2:05.6

So, especially for teens who've used tanning beds in their teens,

2:09.6

you're going to see a tremendous amount of sun damage and skin
