In this episode, I answer the question, “Is your thyroid diagnosis correct?” Surprisingly, this question is asked more commonly than you think. Even in the functional medicine sphere, thyroid issues are overdiagnosed and overtreated, often leading patients down the wrong treatment path.
Rather than being shoehorned into a thyroid diagnosis, it’s important to look at the scientific evidence that explains why it may not be your thyroid causing symptoms of fatigue, digestive issues, or brain fog. Listen in to hear when thyroid medication and interventions are necessary, what TPO and TSH levels indicate a thyroid issue, and what steps you can take to discover the true root cause of your health issues.

| 0:45.9 | diagnosis is correct. And there's some fairly shocking stats that are important for you to understand |
| 0:51.1 | I want to share with you because when looking at your TSA and your antibodies, as it pertains of course to hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's autoimmunity, |
| 1:00.8 | there oftentimes is inaccuracy in how the diagnosis is made. |
| 1:06.1 | So let's start with probably the most compelling data point that I've seen here, |
| 1:11.3 | a paper by Levatus that we've shared on the show before, that found 39% of people were on hormone |
| 1:19.2 | that they needed, whereas 61% of individuals were able to come off thyroid hormone, be tested |
| 1:27.0 | six to eight weeks later, and found their |
| 1:30.3 | blood thyroid hormone levels were completely normal. And not only that, but to quote, |
| 1:36.7 | after stopping levitiroxin, the majority of patients reported feeling better with no significant adverse events mentioned |
| 1:46.7 | by any subject. So this 61% of individuals in this study by LeVotis were on hormone they |
| 1:54.9 | didn't need, came off it, were retested six to eight weeks later. their blood levels were normal and their symptoms were |
| 2:04.6 | just fine. In fact, some people felt better, and it's not surprising. If you're on a hormone that |
| 2:10.5 | you don't truly need, you will likely not feel better from it. You will feel worse. |
| 2:15.4 | Now, this was later corroborated by a follow-up meta-analysis pinnacle of |
| 2:21.7 | scientific evidence and they found something similar although not quite as alarming they found |
| 2:26.3 | 37% of patients maintained normal thyroid function after discontinuing thyroid hormone therapy. |
