One of the real legends of California wine making, especially Southern California winemaking, somebody I've always looked up to and the mind behind Aban Klimont and also Clenden Family Winery and Ishi de Ba'ba. Hello. Hey, great to be here. So you started, you know, you got out of the law track in the 70s and you decided after a trip to Europe to maybe throw your hat in the

0:56.7

wine making ring how did it all really happen you know it was a really chaotic time in

1:00.4

the in the 70s as you well know emotionally and politically and I was a great student when I was young in Ohio

1:06.9

I moved to California it became more and more difficult through the late 60s to actually

1:12.0

care that much about school and there was a lot going on.

1:15.6

And so I went to UC Santa Barbara.

1:41.7

time in France, Spain, Italy, in wine regions.

Then I went back after graduating in 1977 and spent time in Champaign and in Burgundy.

1:52.0

And after spending, I effectively turned 21 living in Bordeaux

1:55.8

the University of California, Santa Barbara had its overseas program studying at the

2:00.4

University of Télance and so I ended up coming back after the 77 trip

2:06.8

thinking that I could actually make a living in the wine business when I saw

2:10.2

people in Burgundy. In Bordeaux you can't unless you're a Duke Count Baron or Prince

2:14.4

it's not going to happen. In Burgundy if you have a tractor three rows of vines and a room for

2:19.1

20 or 30 barrels in your basement you can be as powerful as anybody in the area. So I applied

2:23.9

to law school, one law school bolt hall at Berkeley and I was late in my

2:27.4

application. They didn't accept me and I sort of dragon hose and worked for
