This is CBSi and the world. I'm John Battler with Patrick K O'Donnell. His book is dog company. They survive D-Day. They survive Hill 400. Very few of them, however, are available to talk to in the early part of the 21st century.

Patrick has an enormous library of facts that he's assembled, oral histories, over the years. And he came to writing this book thanks to Len Lamell

and others because they are the remaining memories of Dog Company.

Let's go to where Len Lamel and you had your talk.

This was in southern Jersey, early part of this century,

is that right, Patrick?

Yes, it was a situation where, you know, books find me. I've written 13 books, seven on World War II and other wars, and books have a tendency to find me,

and that was certainly the case where I was, I happened to be in that area and I'll never forget I was eating

eating pizza that night and I said to myself what is my next good book going to be and

I'm near the Mamuth battlefield and I decided to give one the mail call without any real prep and I said, I've known him for years. So do you mind if I stopped by? Sure, it was an absolute

pet. And I went to his home and we watched Mets game or a, we watched a baseball game and he I see what your next

book could it be and I said I'm not sure when,

dog company, Pat, you should tell the story of dog company.

And that for me was an tremendous honor to be asked to tell their story which is such an incredible

story. It's a story about men that literally shaped history that were in some of

the great inflection points of the war and I

have known Lens since the mid 90s along with my other great friend Sydney

Solomon who was that point de la Classe, they led that attack.

The other force against the borders and many, many of these other men,

which it was a real honor to have that assignment if you will admission to to bring

back bring to life the story of Dogg company and I interviewed all of the survivors. I had Lynn's personal notes from Deep Day on our casualties and other special, you know, the things that he had saved.
