Summary

In this fascinating episode of Beauty Bytes, I am joined by Dr. Kay Linker, a brilliant neuroscientist, aging researcher, and the founder of Aionion, the first longevity-focused supplement brand created specifically for women . We dive deep into what actually happens to our brains as we age—hint: it's not just the neurons, but the support cells like astrocytes and microglia that change the most. Dr. Linker breaks down the "longevity gap" for women, explaining how the steep drop-off in estrogen during perimenopause and menopause severely impacts dopamine, serotonin, and mitochondrial biogenesis, meaning women need to start preparing for brain aging in their 30s. We also tackle modern threats to brain health, from how scrolling on social media destroys our attention span via random dopamine rewards, to the terrifying reality of microplastics accumulating in the brain

She has a Ph.D. in neuroscience and a deep expertise in longevity science. So we're going to dive deep into women's

health but also men to understand how the brain ages. What kind of things can we do proactively

and preemptively to improve memory and aging changes of the brain?

0:56.0

There's lifestyle, there's biology, there's evidence-based protocols you can actually do.

So I hope you take notes.

Thank you. I'm so excited to be here.

Of course. So tell me a little bit about your background and what made you get into neuroscience.

1:10.0

Yeah, so I was in

1:11.3

neuroscience for pretty early on I did my undergrad in neuroscience PhD in

1:16.3

neuroscience and then postdoc in neuroscience I kind of was all over the place

1:20.3

before that but once I found neuroscience I was convinced that this was the coolest

field to study amazing well I know that you believe very much in preventing brain aging changes, but just so the

1:31.5

audience knows, can you take us through what happens to the aging brain, like in terms

1:35.5

of how it changes?

1:37.7

So there's a lot of changes.

1:40.0

I think what people would be surprised to find is that actually the cells that change the

most as we age are not actually our neurons.
