Summary

We are naturally programmed to find the shortest route from Point A to Point B. We want to be fast and efficient. We don’t want to waste time with unnecessary detours. We want to check the box that signals DONE. Mission accomplished. Task completed.   However, if you look back at anything you’ve done in life that took a little extra time or required a detour (that might have been very frustrating at the moment), you can likely see some sort of gift or a little bit of magic that you wouldn’t have been able to receive if you swiftly moved from Point A to Point B without interruption, distraction or detour. It is the detours and the squiggly, indirect routes from Point A to Point B that create space for unique opportunities to build relationships, learn some of life’s best lessons, charter new territory, practice a new skill, fumble and fail your way forward, grow in ways you didn’t know you needed to grow, find little bits of magic you didn’t know you were looking for.  In this episode, I talk through why the squiggly, indirect route is often the best route - even if you’re the kind of person (like me!) who doesn’t like to waste a single moment on something that appears to be unnecessary at the onset. Hello, Shameless moms. Happy Monday. Oh, we have somewhere behind us. We have Fall right in front of us.

1:00.7

Pumpkin spice lattes are about to hit the market. Maybe they already did. I don't know.

1:04.1

For me, Fall doesn't start until Trader Joe puts out all their pumpkin stuff. And I was last there

1:08.6

two days ago and it wasn't out yet. So it's not quite time.

1:12.4

But as soon as that happens, what I know is that like after that in Seattle, like shortly after

1:17.3

you see those first pumpkins, all of a sudden the weather changes and you can pull out your puffy

1:21.1

vests and your ugs. And then we're just in it. And we're in it for a real long time and we get

1:24.7

bitter about being in it. But right now I'm looking forward to that moment where we pull out the cozies. So maybe you're with me. I know some people

1:33.7

are still like in the dead of summer in terms of temperature. I was following someone today who's in

1:38.5

Texas right now for work. And they showed up and it's 101 degrees. And they were like, oh my gosh,

1:43.0

are you kidding me? And a bunch of people from Texas replied to the post and they were like, welcome to every day of our lives for like the last six months.

1:50.3

Like triple digits, just months and months and months on end. So some of you won't be bringing out your puffy vests for a while.

1:55.8

And not to make light of global warming, but the post was pretty funny and the comments were pretty funny in

2:01.2

terms of people being so, so fed up with the massive amount of heat that we just, we don't see

2:08.8

up in here, up here in the Pacific Northwest while we're getting on our ugs.

2:12.4

So what we're going to talk about today is why it's better to take the long route. And I'm excited to dig into this

2:20.2

topic because I am someone who does not like taking the long route. I want to get from point A to
