In 2018, 22-year old TikTok/Douyin dancer Chen Qiaofeng was killed in the middle of a busy city centre in China. She had shot to internet fame only 2 months before her death after she filmed a viral video that made her an influencer overnight. But in the months leading up to her murder, her boyfriend Wu Yidong had been subjecting her to a life of abuse. And since she became viral online, his abuse and obsession over her intensified. Because not only was she his girlfriend, but now she would become his income. When Qiaofeng couldn’t take his exploitative abuse any longer, she tried to escape.
