The story began some years ago with a large box that sat unexplained in the corner of our living room.

Set there for weeks.

It appeared soon after Thanksgiving. It sat there untouched throughout

all of the holidays, most of December. Big bucks, tall as I was, which isn't saying much, I was only four years old.

Unlike the other boxes near the Christmas tree, this one bore no glistening wrapping no shiny ribbons.

It displayed no name, neither of giver nor receiver.

It was taped shut, tightly, tightly shut, or my brother and I for sure would have found some way to pry it open.
