So, Birdo, when I first started this podcast 13 years ago, I imagined that you and I would share

0:06.8

the all the tasks involved in the podcast. When I would come up with topics, you would come up

0:13.0

with topics, I would get people to interview, you would get people to interview, all the various

0:18.2

things. But you vastly underestimated my laziness. And soon realized that I had to do everything,

0:25.0

and you showed up, which is great. You're a very good, in, you know, basketball commentary

0:31.6

terms. You're a good color man. That's right. And you will, or color commentary, right? And,

0:37.2

you know, you're, you're the best, or when it comes to that, but you've never prepared your own

0:41.6

topic until today, which day, which you have coined a burtopic. It is a portmanteau of Birdo and

0:50.7

topic. So what are we talking about today, Birdo? Which, by the way, it's going to be confusing if

0:55.3

I start posting on Instagram and I post burtopic's because they're spelled the same way. That's right.

All right. So today we're talking about growing up with music in general, but my specific experience,

1:09.9

I think your specific experience was one where we grew up with radio and we had our top 40 every

1:16.5

week. And then we also grew up with MTV and videos. And a lot of our experiences were

1:22.4

soundtracked by that music that was playing on the radio and those videos that we were watching

1:26.8

on MTV. It was so embedded into the culture. And we probably, I know that you've talked about it.

1:32.5

We have memories that were attached to what was happening that week in music. And I got curious

1:38.2

about it because it was potentially a first in human history, like a confluence of things that

1:44.9

hadn't happened before and may not happen again. So it's pretty fascinating. What do you mean?

1:50.7

What do you mean? In that, okay, so certainly before recorded music, you didn't have a device that

1:57.4

you could just like turn on and there was music playing. So for you to listen to music, you either

2:01.5

had to sing it yourself or someone in your household or you'd have to travel somewhere where some

2:06.7

group was playing. And the further back you go, the harder that would have been to come by.
