James Carville is down in Louisiana and our guest today is William Cone, a three term

Republican Senator from Maine, and then he was Bill Clinton's Defense Secretary.

But before that, Bill Cone was a freshman congressman on the House Judiciary Committee

in 1974.

He became one of the key figures in listening to, studying, and then making the case for

impeachment against Richard Nixon.

Despite warnings that would end his political career as a Republican, and I believe Bill

you even got death threats.

Oh yeah, I got a lot of death threats.

My family did as well.

And don't forget it was a different time then, but the passions were still pretty deep.

There was a bomb threat one night where we were holding a hearing and we ended up evacuating

the Rayburn building and I ended up in the basement, the Longworth building with the

great historian Teddy White as they tried to clear the building from the alleged bomb.

There was no bomb found, but that was the kind of thing that was going on back then.

But that was the environment.

But the environment today is a lot different, the political environment, some of the threats

are.
