Simley, Silasena, California Republican Kevin McCarthy voted out a speaker.

The house chamber was full and quiet as the tally was read.

The yeas are 216.

The nays are 210.

And with that, congressman Steve Womack presiding over the house announced Kevin McCarthy

was no longer speaker.

The office of speaker of the house of the United States House of Representatives is

hereby declared vacant.

The extraordinary vote came after Florida Republican Matt Gaetz introduced a motion

to House McCarthy.

He was joined by seven other Republicans and every Democrat.

McCarthy becomes the first speaker to lose a motion to vacate and comes less than a

year after he won the speaker ship following 15 rounds of voting.
