The court rejected President Trump's executive order declaring children born to people in the U.S.

illegally or temporarily are not American citizens.

Writing for the majority, Chief Justice Roberts walked through the historical developments

leading up to the birth of the 14th Amendment.

Quote, citizenship then and now was the right to have rights to freely participate in

our political community.

The framers of the 14th Amendment extended that promise to every freeborn person in this land.

Fox is Shannon Bream outside the Supreme Court, but Justice Samuel Alito called the decision

risk to national security.

Outlining a scenario in which a woman from a country hostile to the U.S. comes here to give birth,

then returns to a place where the child would be, quote, inculcated with hatred of this country,

but free to travel on a U.S. passport with no restrictions in or out of the U.S.

Quote, even if he plots to harm this country, he cannot be deprived of his status as a citizen.

President Trump is calling on Congress to develop legislation on birthright citizenship.
