Meanwhile, U.S. diplomats were evacuated from Sudan as the political unrest there has escalated.

U.S. Special Forces entered the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, according to the U.S. Department

of Defense.

Just under 100 American staff members from the U.S. Embassy were evacuated, along with

a small number of people from allied countries, including Canada.

We are learning more about the details of this mission.

U.S. officials say three Chinook helicopters took off from Djibouti before landing in Ethiopia

to refuel.

The choppers then flew three hours to Khartoum to conduct this rescue.

Army Lieutenant General Douglas Sims described the operation as clean and fast, adding that

all the people evacuated are safe.

Sims stressed this evacuation was planned for the past week, and that it was conducted

without the help of parties on the ground.
