Summary

#079 Exploring Tuscany's Maremma region with Emiko Davies

Italy has thousands of miles of stunning coastline but most English-speaking visitors see very little of it, sticking to well-worn paths. Today we're going to let you in on a little secret. The Tuscan coastline is a jewel waiting to be explored.

Our guest, author Emiko Davies devoted her book Acquacotta to the recipes, people, places and food of the beautiful Maremma region where she and her family lived and explored. Emiko shares with us the places to go and things to see, do and eat to get a taste of this unique  Italian region between Rome and Tuscany.

Each week your host, Katie Clark, takes you on a journey in search of magical landscapes,

0:29.3

history, culture, wine, gelato, and, of course, a whole lot of pasta.

If you're dreaming of Italy and planning future adventures there,

you've come to the right place.

0:50.6

Chau-a-tuti, hello everyone. I hope you're all doing well and that our friends in the Northern

0:56.9

Hemisphere are enjoying their summer and getting ready for their vacations. This year seems so much

1:03.2

more hopeful than last year with the restrictions easing, so no doubt it's going to be lots of fun.

1:09.2

In Italy, summer means one thing. The beach. And of course,

1:13.6

there are miles and miles of coastline to enjoy. 7,500 kilometres of coastline, in fact, so that's

1:20.3

about 4,660 miles, I think. It's a long way. And around half of that is is beaches and the rest of it is rocky cliffs.

1:29.1

So it's unsurprising that with so much coastline, Italians love visiting the sea during their

1:34.1

summer vacation and enjoying some time on the beach.

1:37.2

But what is surprising is that most visitors from outside Europe don't really see much of

1:42.3

the coast at all. Most visitors stick to Venice,

1:45.4

the Amalpi Coast and Cinque Therterre, or maybe Sicily, Puglia and Sardinia, and, if they are very

1:50.6

clever, Calabria. So if you're a sea lover, there is a whole world of opportunity awaiting

1:56.5

in Italy that's yet to be explored, which brings me to this week's destination, the Morema region in Tuscany.

2:04.2

Covering almost a quarter of Tuscany,

2:06.4

Marema is a large area in the southwest that stretches from just below Elba Island

2:10.9

to the border with Lazio.
