My writing teachers in graduate school, Frederick Bartholome, it kind of blew my mind at the time. He's like, why don't you start your books? Not just to me, he tells everyone on your first line. Like, if this is somebody's like 50th anniversary party, why wait to like the middle of page two? Tell us on the first line. And so I do try to do that in my books. Like the first paragraph, it's already starting. Like you don't want to take your time. And that's not because people tell you that an agent reads the first three pages.

It's because that's what's better for books. You have to start right away.
