You know the lead singer is the guy in the band that usually gets most of the attention the the spotlight at the front of the stage.

But this week we're going to focus on someone who's usually a little further back on the stage, the drummer.

Someone who doesn't always get the attention, but is often just as deserving.

Greg as a drummer I could not agree more it is satisfying to hear you say that.

To start this show we thought we needed to know a little bit more about what a drummer does and how he or she fits in with a band.

For that insight, we spoke with drummer and composer Joe Wong.

He is the host of The Trap Set, a podcast that is just about drummers.

Joe has interviewed dozens and dozens of drummers, from Jazz Fusion Great Billy Cobham to Brendan

Canty of Fugazi, to Bill Ward of Black Sabbath he even

interviewed me. For this conversation on our show with him we started by asking why the drummer doesn't always get the same level of respect as others in the band.

I think it's because drummers are inherently nurturing people and because of that they are taken advantage of.

Right, we give and we give.

What is this a therapy class here?

I thought we were talking about drummers.

Yeah, I think, you know, drumming, drums are the most difficult instrument

logistically and lifestyle wise. I mean you have to from the very

beginning have a place to set up and play and then when you want to start playing

shows you need to get a vehicle. So we're still operating in the paradigm

from when sheet music was the medium of choice.
