We're releasing this on the day the United States usually honors Cesar Chavez.

In 2014, President Obama designated March 31st as a national day of celebration for the monumental

accomplishments Chavez made in the civil rights and labor movements.

But this year, communities nationwide are grappling with recent revelations about a dark side of Chavez.

The allegations that he sexually abused women and girls, including labor icon Dolores Werta,

have shocked the country.

She said she stayed silent then and for decades after because, quote,

I believe that exposing the truth would hurt the farm worker movement I have spent my entire life fighting for.

I have kept this secret long enough.

Today is also the final day of women's history month.

Now this is a time when we recognize the leadership and contributions of women and girls today

and throughout history.

But our recognition has to amount to more than a celebration of impressive accomplishments.

It's also our responsibility to bear witness to the unspeakable experiences that countless

numbers of women and girls still face.
