Summary

Today we have a special interview for you guys. We were able to sit down with 82 year old Claude Strother of Gastonburg, Alabama for an in depth discussion on his life & turkey hunting. At the time we recorded this interview Mr. Claude was battling cancer, and unfortunatley he passed away just a few weeks before the release of this episode. In this episode, Claude shares stories from the early days of turkey hunting, how the sport has changed over the years, and what he believes most hunters get wrong today. We talk old-school turkey hunting tactics, calling styles, patience, woodsmanship, and why getting close still matters more than gear or gimmicks. Along the way, Claude reflects on a lifetime spent in the woods, the lessons turkey hunting has taught him, and the importance of preserving hunting stories, southern heritage, and the culture that comes with it. This episode isn’t just about killing turkeys...it’s about wisdom earned, mistakes made, and a way of life that’s slowly fading. Got a question for the show? A lot of the guests that we feature on this show like to target feed trees to hunt white-tailed deer.

Whether it's hunting white oaks, red oaks, water oaks, not all oaks, whatever the case may be, they all do things a little bit different. But there is one common theme between all of them. And that is, when you're hunting feed trees, you just need to check as many trees as you can, find that fresh hot sign, and set up. That is what's going to give you the best chance at seeing deer or seeing a buck.

0:23.1

Well, there's two different tools you can use that fresh hot sign and set up that is what's going to give you the best chance at seeing deer or seeing a buck well there's two different tools you can use that are seriously helpful for that the first one you've heard us talk about it is the acre and producing oak layer from on x hunt you turn it on it'll show you where the white oaks are at where the red oaks are at where it's mixed red and white oaks now there's's another one that I've used here lately, and it's

the coniferous versus deciduous layer. So it shows you what's pine trees, what's deciduous trees like oaks, and then what's a mix of both. So my new hunting club is mostly pine trees, which if you're hunting in the deep south, a lot of you guys can probably relate to that. But I turn that layer on on my Onex Hunt app, and it showed some areas of mixed pines and hardwoods that I completely missed just by looking at the satellite image. So I went and popped in, checked those areas out and sure enough found a bunch of white oaks that were kind of interspersed with these pines that are just loaded. So not only do those two layers help me find oaks faster, but it also helps me find the oaks that I'm

overlooking. So go check them out on the Onex Hunt app. And hey, if you want to try out in an elite

membership, use the promo code Southern at checkout. It'll get you 20% off and it helps out the show.

improving low-light transmission, giving you a lot more confidence with your hunt. If you're

1:38.6

wanting an effective rifle scope, that gives you great low-light capability without breaking the

bank, check out the new Crossfire HD scope from Vortex. And if you're interesting buying one, you can head over to

Eurooptic.com and use the code Southern 10 for 10% off your order of any vortex optics. If you're

1:57.4

wanting to free up some weight this fall, but also be quite getting in and out of your tree and even packing around, you need to check up the latitude.

2:04.6

Carbon S.S. Climbing sticks have been awesome to use over this past season, guys.

2:10.6

They are very lightweight at one pound per stick, 18 inches long.

2:14.3

They are super, super easy to put on the tree. But even best yet, they have no metal in them. So they're extremely quiet. That's the one thing I love about these sticks. All the sticks I've used in the past are mostly made out of aluminum. You had to tape them up. You had to do something to them in order to keep them quiet. Because if you did it, whether brush hit it or they hit together or hit anything else, there is a loud metal ting.

2:35.0

Well, with these carbon sticks, there's none of that.

2:37.0

It's a very subtle thud sound when they hit together or brush up against anything else.

2:42.0

And I always tell people, it sounds almost like a black rack rattling antlers if you hit them together.

2:47.0

I really like these sticks. Also, with them being carbon, they are very warm to the touch, even on the coldest days,

2:53.3

and they pack really well together.
