There really isn't much history available for this movie, because it was really just like a cynical but also whimsical cash grab for something that was seen as a fad all all the kids like this new toy let's make a movie about the toy and then i assume all the kids will forget about this toy within a year and then we make a movie about the next toy well they, they didn't realize Mario would be around for 40 more years and counting. So this movie is not really celebrated,

even though it is the first Mario movie. And it really mostly exists as a footnote in the history

of Mario. And only recently has it been made more available in a more viewable form, not in

12 YouTube chunks that were ripped from like a beta max tape?

You can view this in probably a quality that was greater than what you would see in a theater in 1986.

No, it's, yes.

The version that's out there now is incredible to think that like, I would guess the version we had before was because when it got

released in Japan like this is a whole other podcast but like Japan had a whole thing about

tapes that were only rental and you couldn't resell them like purchase retail like there

were entire lawsuits about it and so you'd have to have like illegally dubbed the VHS copy or just stolen a VHS copy

you rented for it.

So you're already ending up with like a copy of a copy of already just VHS 480P quality

that's only going to be so good.

And then now you have just like a pure from film scan of it that could like be put on a 4K

released by like Arrow or Criterion. It's so good. This is more of a vinegar syndrome release if

you ask me. There you go. Yes. I'm available for the commentary. So yes, there was no home media

release for this in Japan after the initial VHS and Betamax release. Perhaps there was a non-rental version of this. I don't know. I couldn't find this. But this has been really unavailable in its home country as well. So people in Japan aren't watching this. They don't know. They've forgotten about it. It was available once and not available anymore. It's been delisted, et cetera, et cetera.
