Summary

Peeling skin, redness, and pain - are you experiencing these symptoms after your relaxing summer vacay? You probably have sunburn! Sunburns develop as a result of being exposed to the ultraviolet (UV) rays emitted by the sun or artificial UV light sources. It's important to note that sunburns can contribute to premature aging of the skin and increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Taking proactive measures to protect your skin can help reduce the chances of getting sunburnt. Aloe Vera, for instance, is a great way to alleviate a sunburn. Tune into my Five Minutes Friday to learn some more sunburn remedies!

Well, hello, hello, guys, you're listening to Beauty Bites with Dr. K. Secrets of a Plastic Surgeon,

0:20.7

and it's time for a five-minute Friday.

0:23.3

And today we're going to talk about sunburn. It's the season. And you might be at risk for getting a

0:31.1

sunburn. And I'm going to teach you how to diagnose and treat those sunburns because sometimes

0:36.9

you're on the beach.'s cloudy you didn't even

0:39.7

realize it that there was UV light out there and you come home with a major sunburn. I've seen

0:45.3

a couple people in the office this week with just that problem. And if you're experiencing peeling

0:52.0

skin, redness or pain after your summer holiday,

0:54.9

you probably got way too much ultraviolet light. Remember, UV can cause a burn. Typically,

1:02.8

first and second degree burns can be treated at home, but some people can even get third

1:08.2

degree burns from sun. And that requires some immediate attention you got to take

1:13.3

proactive measures and i know that we talk about sunscreen till we're blue in the face but i'm going to

1:20.0

keep talking about sunscreen because with this climate change and the heating up of the earth the sun

1:26.3

is getting hotter than ever, the UV intensity

1:29.1

is climbing and we're all at risk. And sunburn is this condition of the skin where the skin

1:36.0

becomes so red that it literally is burned due to excessive exposure of the UV. And UV not only

1:43.4

damages the actual skin surface, but damages the DNA of the cells.

1:49.4

And that prevents normal mechanisms of DNA function. It stops your cells from behaving in their regular manner.

1:57.4

It can create mutations and, of course, skin cancer. And what's the most common

2:02.4

skin cancer out there? Basal cell. Next most common and more risky squamous cell. And when you've

2:09.4

heard a lot about melanoma. These are the cancers we're trying to prevent. When you're burned,

2:14.8

your skin will develop erythema and the skin's natural pigment, the melanin, perhaps has not been adequate to shield you from the sun damage. Those of us with more skin of color are protected a little bit, but of course it's a myth that people with skin of color don't require sunscreen.
