Welcome back to the Diet Doctor podcast. I'm your host, Dr. Brett Schur. Today we're talking about

in general, and we're talking with Professor Stu Phillips. Now, Professor Phillips is well-regarded

in the academic realm as being an expert in muscle,

And his list of accolades goes on.

So first, he has his PhD in human physiology.

And now he's a professor at McMaster University in the Department of Kinesiology.

But he's also the director of PACE, P-A-C-E,

the Physical Activity Center of Excellence at McMaster University, and he's the director

of the McMaster Center for Nutrition, Exercise, and Health Research.

And he just has such a wide range of knowledge when it comes to the role of exercise for maintaining

muscle, the role of nutrition and especially protein for maintaining muscle and this balance

of the need for exercise and protein for muscle, balancing some of the concerns of whether

it's bone, kidney, or longevity in general. And I really like

his perspective on how we have to be very cautious about interpreting the dangers of protein

because making the leap from flies and animals to humans has some downside. And I think

you'll appreciate some of his perspective there. But overall, one of the main take-homes I get from talking to him is the science is not 100% settled.

And we have to factor in who we're talking about, their age, their physical activity, humans or flies.

And when we interpret the science, well done science, when we interpret it,

we have to interpret it with that specific lens in terms of who we're talking about.
