In Romans, all had tales of demons and spirits who drank blood, though they did not call them vampires.

The more modern notion of a vampire began in 18th century Eastern Europe, where verbal storytelling, from many ethnic groups of the region, began to be recorded and published.

The term vampire was popularized in Western Europe after reports of mass hysteria in the 18th century, where people were staking corpses and accusing neighbors of being vampires.

The 1819 book, The Vampire, by English writer John Poladori, kicked off today's vampire imagery.

With Braumstoker's 1897 novel Dracula, cementing the pop culture mythology that endures.

From the enemic twee vampires of Twilight to the sexually liberated and yet vicious vampires of true blood, modern pop culture is still obsessed with the fictional characters.

Of course, as with any sort of mythical creature, there are humans who strive to emulate vampires.

And some cannot separate dream from reality, and are thought to suffer from clinical vampirism, which usually involves necrophilia, cannibalism, sadism, and a fascination with blood.

But there is a vampire subculture that is believed to have stemmed largely from goth culture, but in fact incorporates many elements of sedomasticism.
