Summary

There’s an Instagram account (consensually) sharing the highly coveted (and otherwise secret) formulas behind all your favorite scents; this week I am joined by its founder: Erik Constantin. If you’ve ever wanted to teach yourself how to be a perfumer, Erik’s account @fragrance.drama is a must-follow. Erik’s passion for fragrance extends beyond this account; by day, he is the main trainer on perfumery at Avon Romania, and he’s walking proof that Instagram University is real and thriving; he’s currently working on launching 2 original fragrances.

What are the copyright laws when it comes to fragrance formulas? What’s the difference between inspiration and plagiarism? How has this endeavor been received by peers and perfumers alike? What does open-source formulas mean for the future of perfumery? We discuss it all in today’s ep!

Welcome to the perfume. My son to the day today is one I have been wearing all week. I talked about it in last week's episode.

Mosca Marant from La Cicisson, and it is part of their new potaget collection.

Tracy and I both really love this one in last week's episode when we reviewed this entire

0:26.2

line, and I think what this one gets right that several others in the line missed the mark on,

0:32.4

is that I find with savory gourmand's, one of the genres I hold nearest and dearest in

0:37.3

terms of sense I like to wear and smell, is I find with savory gourmand's, one of the genres I hold nearest and dearest in terms of sense I like to

0:39.0

wear and smell, is I find with savory gourmand's, oftentimes you fall into the sort of like

0:43.7

either or category, which is to say that you have to sacrifice one thing for the other. It's either

0:49.6

incredibly photorealistic and very vegetal or verdant or whatever the note is that it's trying to be

0:57.3

or it's very wearable and beautiful and perfumy. I recognize as I say this that it's subjective,

1:03.9

but usually if it's like really wearable and pretty, it's more conceptual and abstract or if

1:08.4

it's photorealistic, it might really capture the essence of that

1:11.9

smell, but like, I'm not sure if I personally want to smell like that. Like, it smells too much

1:16.7

like I'm actually cooking in the kitchen and less of something that I want to radiate from my body.

1:23.1

Muscamarant is a very pleasant exception, and I feel that it has this sort of soft, fresh, dewy

1:30.7

floral sea in the beetroot note that is also incredibly photorealistic and actually smells

1:36.4

like a beetroot freshly harvested from the ground. And then it also has this sort of soil,

1:42.9

wet dirt, earthy facet as well, and I just am loving wearing it.

1:48.6

And it's clearly imprinting on me on a personal level as well because I just made myself a

big bowl of borsh for dinner.

1:55.1

Borsh, how I love thee, the color, the texture, the taste, the smell, the very logical and rational explanation for

bowel movements that are off color. And I'm sharing that on a very personal note as someone
