0:16.8	Welcome to the Bible study podcast. As you know, last week, we started a study on leadership, and we looked at leadership and authority and Jesus teaching on how leaders are not intended to rule over or lord over with their authority, but instead are intended to be servants.
0:34.0	And in this particular episode, I'd like to look at one aspect of what it means to be a servant leader, and that is encouragement.

0:44.4	I'm hoping some of you knew who I was talking about when I said that we were going to talk this week about someone who I think deserve some credit for the writing of two of the four Gospels, and yet no word
0:56.6	that they ever spoke is recorded, to the best of my knowledge, in the Bible. Did you figure out
1:02.5	who we're talking about? We're talking about Barnabas. And I say we're talking about Barnabas,
1:08.2	but I really should be a little more accurate. As he is introduced in Acts chapter 4, verse 36, we're told his name is really Joseph,
1:16.7	the person who is referred to in every other verse in the Bible that references him as Barnabas.
1:21.7	Barnabas is a nickname.
1:23.2	It says Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas,
1:27.3	which means
1:27.8	son of encouragement, sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the
1:32.2	apostles' feet.
1:33.5	That one sentence tells us the first thing about this very influential leader in the
1:39.4	early church who is often behind the scenes.
1:43.3	The second time we have mentioned of Barnabas in the Bible is
1:46.7	in Acts chapter 9 in verse 27. This is a section that is talking about Saul who's just become Paul
1:55.7	or about to become Paul. So he has just been converted. And it says here that Saul spent several days with the disciples
2:03.4	in Damascus at once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the son of God. All those who
2:08.1	heard him were astonished and said, isn't he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those
2:12.9	who call on his name? And hasn't he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?
