0:16.5 | Thought today I would visit with you about sluggishness, spiritual sluggishness and physical sluggishness. |
0:24.5 | And what is sluggishness? I think we all know. |
0:28.0 | But it's just dragging around, stalled out, maybe stalled out all the way, or stalled out just a little. |
0:36.0 | But letting a feeling of just not operating on all cylinders get you down. |
0:42.5 | And maybe you wake up a little icky or head achy or you just lack energy, you're just not in the mood. |
0:50.5 | You're just not. You're not revved up and ready to go. |
0:55.0 | And an older word for sluggish is slothful, and both these words come from animals, the sloth and the slug, neither of which we want to imitate, right? |
1:07.0 | So let's look at Hebrews 6, 11 and 12. Here it is. |
1:10.5 | And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, |
1:20.5 | but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. |
1:26.0 | The opposite of being sluggish is being diligent, and the author of Hebrews is telling us to show diligence all the way to the finish line. |
1:37.0 | And I'm so fond of Matthew Henry, and I looked at his commentary for these verses, listen to what he says about them. |
1:44.0 | They must not love their ease nor lose their opportunities. |
1:49.0 | And sluggishness is the way to lose our opportunities. |
1:53.0 | And you and I have so many opportunities today to be physically diligent and spiritually diligent, so let's approach our day, our week, our month this way. |
2:05.0 | Lord, help me to take advantage of all my opportunities to be diligent and not lose my opportunities. |
2:12.0 | We all do lose opportunities. |
2:15.0 | We have opportunities to be gracious that we miss or to be forgiving and we miss and we have to go back and pick things up and put things right. |
2:24.0 | But we should have in our mind to be looking out for opportunities to apply what we know and to do it. |
2:32.0 | So first this means as far as taking advantage of opportunities to be diligent, it means we have to resist the temptation to become sluggish. |
