0:37.0	In other words, for a Restoration to happen, something has to be restored.
0:43.0	So when we talk about the Restoration, what exactly do we think is being restored?
0:48.0	The Church's Bicentennial Proclamation to the World offers a helpful synopsis.
0:53.0	According to the Proclamation, the Restoration entails a restored church, restored priesthood authority, including priesthood keys, and the restored gospel,
1:03.0	meaning the doctrine and teachings of Jesus Christ and the prophets and apostles throughout the ages.
1:08.0	The work of the Restoration is not yet complete but remains ongoing through the gift of continuing revelation.
1:17.0	God continues to inspire and guide the apostles He has called to lead the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
1:24.0	which is Christ's New Testament Church restored.
1:28.0	But here's the funny thing.
1:30.0	As far as I've been able to discover, Joseph Smith never talked about a, quote, restored church.
1:37.0	Not once.
1:38.0	I've scoured both the scriptures he produced as well as the Joseph Smith papers, which aim to gather and publish every known surviving Joseph Smith document,
1:47.0	except in the historical introductions which are written by modern scholars and are not part of the original sources.
1:53.0	I have not found a single use of the phrases restored church or restoration of the Church.
2:01.0	This was more than a little surprising to me.
