Summary

The story of Peter in John 21 shows how even devoted followers can revert to past behaviors during times of uncertainty. • Peter's declaration "I'm going fishing" was not a casual hobby but a return to his pre-disciple identity • Before following Jesus, Peter had been rejected from rabbi school and told to learn his father's fishing trade • Returning to old ways during crisis is like a healed person choos...

Welcome to Week 16 here with the Daily Blade. We're going to cover in order to get ready

0:26.0

for Resurrection Weekend, we are going to be in John 21 this entire week. John 21 is one of

0:33.5

my favorite passages in the Bible. It's got so much for us. And a part of it is we're going to

0:38.6

look at the life of Peter. Man, I hope studying the life of Peter, or at least some of the

0:42.9

incidences in his life make you feel better about being a disciple because he is just the eternal

0:48.3

screw-up. And yet God uses screw-ups like Peter and like me all the time to do infinitely more

0:53.7

than any of us ever hoped or

0:56.0

imagine. What you have to understand is John 21 is post-crucifixion, post-resurrection. So Jesus has

1:04.1

showed up a couple of times to the disciples, but the disciples still don't know exactly what

1:10.3

they are going to do with their life.

1:11.8

Jesus has yet to give them the great commission, and so they're just kind of figuring out

1:16.4

what to do. So John chapter 21, we'll pick it up in verse one, says this, and after this,

1:22.2

Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the sea of Tiberius. And he revealed himself in this way.

1:30.2

Simon Peter, Thomas, called the twin, Nathaniel of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee,

1:35.7

by the way, that's James and John, and two others of his disciples were together. Now, part of what

1:40.6

I love about this is John is writing this later in his life, and though the Bible is the holy inspired word of God, it is also just an actual historical account of what

1:50.0

was happening.

1:51.0

And John, I don't know, he either doesn't want to mention those two guys or maybe he can't

1:54.7

remember who it is.

1:56.1

And the reason he would do this is because this is an actual historical account.

2:00.5

This isn't a fiction or a fairy tale.
