Summary

Matt dives into the oven and talks about training and racing in the heat!

It's common for performance to suffer in hot and humid conditions, but why? What happens physiologically when we enter into these conditions that make it so hard to regulate our core temperature and blood volume?

In addition to helping you understand "the why," Matt also provides specific strategies on how to prepare in advance for heat training and acclimation and how these strategies can boost performances in any of your races.

0:23.8

your host Matt Dixon. And today I'm going to start off by telling you a little story. And it's

0:29.2

going to be about one of my Iron Man performances. Now, typically, when someone tells you a story

0:34.3

of their sporting accomplishments, you're going to have to fasten your seatbelt and prepare for a passionate story of heroism and valiant effort against all odds. The

fish really was that big. But this isn't that type of story. It's actually one that entails me

0:50.5

spending every step of the marathon portion of an Iron Man running, like we say in

0:54.9

Purple Patch, like a donkey dipped in cement. And so, let's get going. First, the scene,

Cordelaine Iron Man 2003. You guys that are outside of the US, Cordelaine, Idaho, the mountain

west, excitement rose as race day loomed. Every day leading in was

1:14.4

windless, partially cloudy, and a very clement mid-70s. The race plan was set. My pacing, my strategy,

1:24.3

my nutrition all dialed in. When it came to nutrition, my final words from my coach

1:29.8

at the time were, if you're struggling on the run, turn to Coca-Cola. I promise you, Matt, it's liquid

1:36.9

gold, but a warning. Once you've gone to Coke, don't stop taking Coke.

1:48.1

Well, with that in the back of my mind, race day came.

1:51.5

The kick in the family jewels arrived.

1:57.4

High wind and over 100 degrees, a 30 degree shift in temperatures overnight.

2:03.0

Few metric heads, yes, that is darn hot. One might call it a Mountain West Classic. Well, I hadn't even done many Iron Man's by this stage, and the one thing that

2:08.5

was short of temperament, enthusiasm and performance, was high heat. I hated it. So how did it

2:16.2

go? Well, out of the swim?
