Luke chapter 14 verse 26

Jesus said if anyone comes to me

and does not hate his own father and mother, and wife, and children,

and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life,

he cannot be my disciple.

What in the world does that mean?

You can't be a disciple of Jesus unless you hate your mom and dad,

your wife and kids, your family, your brothers and sisters, unless you hate your

own life.

And that's straight from the mouth of Jesus. What does that mean? Because we know in other places in the Bible

we are commanded to love our Father and Mother, to honor them, to love our spouse, to love our children, to love

our brothers and sisters and care for them.

So what does this mean when Jesus says if anybody comes to me and

doesn't hate these people? Well it's pretty clear based on this text as well as others like it. I think about Matthew chapter 10.

When Jesus says something very similar but says whoever does not love me more than his mother or father, more than his wife, our children.

So the picture here is comparison and the meaning is crystal clear.

For a follower of Jesus.

Your love for him should make your closest relationships in this world look like hate in comparison.
