Summary

When people have a negative physical reaction to a specific word, it's called word aversion (not misophonia as some people mistakenly presume). "Moist," "pustule," and "panties" are just a few of the words that come up over and over. In this episode, I talk with a psychologist to see what we know about these kinds of feelings. the English language, writing, history, rules, and cool stuff.

0:13.8

Today, I have some cool stuff because I'm going to talk with Jade Wu about words that

0:18.6

cause people to have negative, physical reactions.

0:22.8

Jade is the host of the Savvy Psychologist Podcast at Quick and Dirty Tips and I thought

0:26.4

she'd be perfect to give us some insight on why people can have such strong feelings

0:32.1

about words.

0:33.4

Hi, Jade. It's good to talk to you today.

0:38.3

Good to talk to you. I'm so glad to be here.

0:40.9

Yeah, you bet. So, when we first talked about doing a show about words that bother people,

0:46.4

like physically bother them, we thought it might be something called misfonia, which means

0:52.1

hated sound. But then you told me it was actually called word aversion. So, what's the

0:59.4

difference between those two things?

1:02.1

Yeah, that's a great question. I actually thought those were the same thing too until

1:07.0

I really looked into it. So, misfonia is when someone has a major averse of reaction

1:14.2

to sounds. Usually bodily sounds like chewing, foot tapping, sometimes, sometimes the voices,

1:22.3

usually nasally voices. And people can have this aversion to specific people making those

1:29.3

noises. And usually the reaction is one of anger and people even say that it's like a

1:35.1

rage kind of feeling. Whereas for word aversion, it's specifically words that people are

1:42.6

averse to whether it's even just seeing the word or hearing the word said, often people

1:47.7

say, I can't even bring myself to say this word. And it's more of like a physical visceral

1:53.7

disgust reaction rather than an anger reaction. Wow. That makes sense as a difference between
