Summary

John sits down with the Northwest Screenwriters Guild at an event to promote the Scriptnotes book, and ends up having a poignant conversation about how the career of screenwriting has changed, missteps John made throughout his career, and how his approach to screenwriting has evolved over time.

He also answers questions on kicking bad writing habits, screenwriting careers outside of Hollywood, what to look for in the projects you choose, whether age matters in a screenwriting career, writing your calling card movie, the sidekick problem, and the real story behind the Prince of Persia movie.

In our bonus segment for premium members, John has been hanging out with sketch writers for the last few weeks and is excited to share what he's learned about writing sketch comedy.

Hello and welcome.

My name is John August, and this is episode 730 of Script Notes,

0:07.1

a podcast about screenwriting and things that are interesting to screenwriters.

0:10.7

This week, Craig and I are still both off on our adventures,

0:14.1

but fingers crossed, we should be back in person with a normal episode next week.

So today, I'm here with producer Drew Marquard. Hey, Drew. Hey, John. I also haven't seen you for a bit either because I've been in negotiations with the Writers Guild and then on vacation before that. So it is nice to see your face again. It's really good to see you too. Yeah. I'm excited for this episode too. Yeah. So this episode reminds me of, you know that feeling where you haven't been to the

0:37.6

grocery store in a while? And so you open the fridge and you're like, what can I actually

0:41.6

eat in here? And then that's the feeling today because we're trying to assemble a meal from

0:46.3

leftovers. And sometimes those turn out really tasty. Oh, those leftover sandwiches that are just

0:51.1

weird things that you don't think go together. But they're great. So looking through the big folder, I think which we had in that folder was this interview I did with the Northwest Screenwriters Guild. This was an event to promote the script notes book and do a Q&A with their members. And it ended up being really great. So the Northwest Screenwriters Guild, we should say, isn't a union, but rather a screenwriting community based out of the Pacific Northwest. It was just me. Craig wasn't

1:15.1

able to join for that one. But what I remember about it is it started out as a sort of standard

1:20.5

promotional stop, but actually became a really good conversation about process and career.

1:27.4

And so we asked them and they said, yes,

1:29.2

that we could take the audio from that and share it with our listeners. I feel like I've heard

1:33.7

you talk about the script notes book and tell your sort of career story four billion times at this

1:40.0

point. And this is the first time I felt like I heard new things and really frank things. And it was really exciting to listen to. Yeah. So there were a lot of good questions. And so we're putting this in here. So it's a little bit of a strange episode because it's just people asking me questions. But it is about the thing that scripted houses is about, which is screenwriting and things that are interesting to screenwriters. And it was also a good reminder that there's folks out there for whom all of this is new.

2:04.8

And there are asking these questions for the first time.

2:07.4

So I enjoy this conversation.

2:08.7

So hopefully you'll still learn something new, even if you listen to 729 episodes of script notes.

2:15.9

And then we're back at the end for a boilerplate and wrap up.

2:18.8

In our bonus segment for premium members, I want to talk about sketch comedy writing because

2:22.8

one of the real joys of being on the negotiating committee for the Writers Guild is we get
