0:27.9	Republicans on Friday blocked the creation of an independent commission to
0:33.2	investigate the January 6th Capitol riot using their filibuster power in the
0:38.2	Senate for the first time this year to doom a full accounting for the deadliest
0:43.3	attack on Congress in centuries. In the very chamber where the insurrection took place,
0:48.8	dozens of Senate Republicans voted to block an independent commission to
0:53.4	investigate the January 6th attack. The motion is not agreed to. With the vast
0:58.8	majority of Republicans determined to shield their party from potential
1:03.6	political damage that could come from scrutiny of the storming of the
1:07.7	Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, only six GOP senators joined Democrats to support
1:14.7	advancing the measure. The final vote, 54 to 35, fell short of the 60 senators
1:21.7	needed to move forward. This vote has made it official. Donald Trump's big lie
1:26.6	has now fully enveloped the Republican Party. I can't imagine anyone voting
1:32.0	against the establishment of a commission on the greatest assaults since the
1:36.2	Civil War on the Capitol. The vote was a stinging defeat for
1:40.5	proponents of the commission who had argued that it was the only way to
1:45.2	assemble a truly comprehensive account of the riot for a polarized nation
1:50.2	modeled after the inquiry into the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks. The
1:56.5	proposed panel of experts would have been responsible for producing a report on
2:01.5	the assault and recommendations to secure Congress by the end of the year. If
2:06.8	we set up this commission, I think the basic goal of our Democratic friends is
2:11.8	to keep relitigating in public what happened back on January 6th rather than
