Today I talk about racial trauma, and, in particular, the racial trauma that African Americans experience. One central tenet of all story work is that in order for healing to occur there has to be an honest naming of what has been true. This is true in your individual story and it is no less true in our collective story as a nation.

talk about racial trauma. I'm also going to share some of my own story with regard to racism.

In fact, let me begin there with some of my own story. In April of 1992, I was a freshman at the

College of William & Mary in Virginia. I will never forget this one particular day. I came out of

the dining hall after eating and there were 30 black students, fists raised to the sky,

screaming at the top of their lungs, chance of no justice, no peace, no justice, no peace.

They were yelling as the cars and people passed by. It was their faces that affected me the most.

They were so angry. And I remember feeling confused. I knew a couple of these students and I had no

idea why they were so angry. I just stood there frozen watching them rage. And I remember the feeling

of intensity that I had in my body and the confusion and the fear that I was missing something big.

I remember thinking to myself, either these 30 men are crazy or I'm crazy, but we have very

different understandings of reality. And as I walked down the sidewalk, I remember thinking over

and over, what are they so angry about? And there was this little voice inside that said,

if they are that angry about something, why aren't you angry about it? In fact, why don't you even
