I began the interview by asking Tom his impressions of the situation in Wuhan.

On the streets, Wuhan is extremely quiet.

There are almost no people walking around on the streets. Most people are

staying at home and following government advice to stay indoors as much as possible and

sometimes venturing out to go to supermarkets, some of which remain open to get supplies and

then quickly going back home again. I could hear birdsong on

the streets of Wuhan during the middle of the day today, which is quite unusual. And I've

been cycling around because there's been a ban imposed on private cars.

So there are some cars on the roads which are making deliveries or which are dropping people off at hospitals.

And apart from that, there are no other private cars allowed.
