Summary

I suspect your daily life is loud, literally and figuratively. Noise from your kids, your partner, your boss, noise on social media, the news, and the entire world outside your door.   As you move through the world listening to all the noise, it’s easy to lose track of your own voice and your inner knowing. With all the outward listening, it’s easy to forget to listen inward.  I recently had a situation where I found myself feeling very uncertain, even physically uncomfortable, as my gut was telling me, “This doesn't feel right.”   While I love to rush through things in order to check them off my list, I made myself sit with this feeling and really listen to it. And I’m so glad I did. As I sat with this feeling, I made some requests of the people around me while this feeling took place. They were unable (or unwilling) to reassure me or provide any validation for what I was feeling, which confirmed my gut feeling: I shouldn’t stay in this situation.   In this episode, I share this entire situation and the steps I took to give myself the space and time to listen inward as this situation unfolded. I hope this gives you some guidance on how to do the same.   We are taught from the time we are wee little girls to prioritize the voices and comfort of others over our own. Hello, Shameless moms. If you're listening in live time, happy Monday. Happy first Monday of

0:58.9

February. Oh my goodness, 2023. It's already just flying by. So today we're going to talk about

1:05.2

listening to yourself, letting yourself listen to you. So we often, as moms, have to practice listening to our children,

1:13.1

right? Like practicing listening with patience, which is so hard and letting these kids take up

1:18.6

so much space with their voices and their needs. And we don't spend a lot of time giving

1:25.0

ourselves that same grace. And so I want to dig into this today.

1:29.3

And I'm going to give you a really specific example of where I practiced this recently.

1:34.0

And I was so glad that I gave myself some time to really sit in the listening, which is

1:40.3

uncomfortable for me because I'm someone who likes to make pretty quick decisions once I feel something or for the sake of getting something over with. And so sometimes I'm like,

1:49.6

I'll endure it being less than I want it to be if I can just make it be over. And I didn't do

1:53.7

that in the situation. I really sat in something for a while to continue to check my gut and also

2:00.2

to give the other party a chance to make it better or make

2:03.6

it different and they didn't. And so I'm going to talk through that in just a minute. I want you to

2:09.3

think about how often you give yourself the opportunity to listen inward rather than just

2:16.3

listening outward and absorbing everything around you.

2:19.4

So I was really conscientious of this last week when I went to a podcasting conference,
