Summary

In this part 2 episode with Alan Altizer, we go deep on the difference in hunting any buck vs. focusing on one buck. We also have an extremley in depth conversation on wind, thermals and how mature bucks use them in ways other deer do not. Other subjects: The difference in mindset between hunting any buck versus targeting one specific mature buck. How tactics shift depending on whether you’re hunting for opportunity or for a particular deer. The role of trail cameras — when they help, when they mislead, and why woodsmanship still matters more. Instinct and experience as defining qualities of great hunters. How patience, diligence, and time in the woods separate consistently successful hunters from others. Why repetition (getting reps) killing deer with a bow builds confidence and sharpens execution. The importance of woodsmanship skills (judging distance, reading sign, moving quietly, handling wind and thermals). The difference between being able to kill deer in general vs. consistently killing mature bucks. The value of learning from mistakes and adapting strategies instead of repeating failures. The idea that success in hunting mirrors success in life — dedication, persistence, and growth. Got a question for the show? You know, cell cameras are super popular these days. I use them. Jacob uses them. I know a lot of you guys use them as well.

0:05.9

Let me tell you something that will save you a little bit of a headache when it comes to cell cameras. That is the cell coverage layer from Onex Hunt. You can turn that layer on and view how the cell coverage is on any property or even certain parts of properties. Now that's helpful for cell cameras because I might be going to an area where I want to put a camera out and I can just before I leave, go ahead and look at the map, see if I've got good enough cell coverage in there. If it's got cell coverage, okay, I'll bring a cell camera. If it doesn't, all right, bring it a normal camera. I know I've been burned a bunch of times bringing a dagum cell camera somewhere and then getting there and then not having any service that's frustrating well this layer from onex hunt remedies that also it's just useful for

0:42.7

planning trips in general you know knowing whether or not you're going to have cell coverage to

0:46.2

call family in case something goes wrong and then of course also if you see that there's no cell

coverage in an area you know you need to go ahead and download that map for offline use on OnX. If you want to check out that layer and a whole bunch of others from OnX Hunt, go get you an elite membership and use the promo code Southern at checkout. It's going to get you a 20% discount and it's going to help us out here at the Southern Outdoorsman podcast. So you'll go check it out. Stay safe this season and know where you stand with OnX Hunt.

bottom of a climbing tree stand to make it more comfortable to carry in the woods. Probably my favorite

2:06.1

piece of gear I've gotten in the last several years is the Ranger 22 from latitude. It's like a do-it-all

2:16.4

season. It's the only pack I use. I use it in early bow season when I'm not carrying much in the woods all the way to

2:22.8

late January rut hunts in the deep south when it's cold and I'm carrying all kinds of clothes and all

2:27.8

kinds of stuff on my back. The Ranger 22 is adjustable enough that I can just use that one backpack
