Summary

In this episode of The Southern Outdoorsmen Podcast, we sit down with legendary hunter Alan Altizer to talk about one of the most powerful deer hunting concepts you’ll ever hear: how a buck’s greatest strength can also be his biggest weakness.Alan shares decades of hard-earned woodsmanship — from reading washed-out tracks and understanding how deer use their senses, to why trail cameras can actually work against you. He explains how mature bucks rely on their strongest traits for survival, and how hunters can use those very strengths to finally outsmart them. • How to read tracks to understand a buck’s behavior • Why some bucks rely more on sight, smell, or sound — and how that changes their bedding • The concept of “kamikaze setups” and making a buck feel safe before moving in • Why trail cameras may give you more problems than solutions • How to exploit a buck’s strengths and turn them into weaknessesGot a question for the show? So here's how I've been using it lately. I got this new property I'm gonna be hunting this year, and the very first thing I did on the property was I went out and I drove all of the roads that are drivable in my truck. and I had the tracker on as I was driving around.

So now I got done driving around, I selected the track on my app and changed it to

0:21.7

where it's just a solid black line. So now I've got a really nice, easy to see roadmap of

everywhere that's drivable in a truck on the property. So here's what that does for me so far. Now I've got

0:32.3

an easy to read map of everywhere that you can drive in a truck on the property. But also that roadmap is

0:38.5

actually very useful because it makes it very easy for me to see what roads are drivable and what

0:44.0

parts of the property are most accessible and what parts of the property are least accessible.

Like I said, one of my favorite tools. If you're not using it already, you should be. And if you
