Summary

John and Craig wonder, how has TV changed in the last ten years? They compare what’s better and worse, the tradeoffs between quality and quantity, how curation is changing, the pros and cons of shorter seasons, and what this all means for writers and viewers.

We also look forward to our time at the Austin Film Festival, offer paths for writers to keep their health insurance, follow up on Three Page Challenge selections that actually got made, and answer listener questions on adapting a screenplay into an audio drama and payment for work after a script is turned in.

In our bonus segment for premium members, John and Craig looks at what makes a damn fine cup of coffee.

Today on the show, television has changed a lot over the last decade, but has it changed for the better, for the worst, or is it a mix?

0:42.6

We'll talk about TV as experienced by viewers and by writers like Craig, working in the medium. Yeah. Then we'll answer some listener questions. And in our bonus segment for premium members, Craig, let's talk coffee. Oh, you just have some coffee. Yeah. And I would say if you think screeners have strong opinions about formatting, you should hear some of them complain about coffee. Well, I think he said the key word there, just complain. Yeah. God, screenwriters complain a lot. That's all we do. We sit around and we complain. And you can hear some of those

complaints live at the Austin and Film Festival. Segway, man. So, reminder that we're going to be at the

Austin Film Festival. A couple things on the calendar here.

Thursday, October 24th is the Open Day Night Party that Highland Pro my company is hosting. So come see us there. Drew will be there. Drew's a big draw. You can see Drew in person. Yeah. Yeah. I think people... Pull them from behind the mic right up front there. People, do they want to touch the hem of your garment?

1:12.9

Everywhere I go.

2:02.3

So, I think people... Pull them from behind the mic right at the front there? People, do they want to touch the hem of your garment? Everywhere I go. So the opening up parties at the bar at the Driscoll, and like, that's a crowded space. Yeah. Now, the Driscoll had sort of become a non-participant because they basically kicked the whole place out. I wonder why. I wonder what happened. I think it was money and mayhem. They may also have some of doing remodeling. Driscoll is also a cool old hotel, but it was kind of a weird fit in terms of space. Yeah, yeah, it was. But that bar is... It's great for hanging out. But it's bananas. It's It's crazy. Friday, we're hosting a Highland keynote at 1045. We're showing off a new feature for Highland. But Craig, you at that same time are working with Alec Berg to talk about. Oh, yeah. Alec Berg and I are returning to do a second chapter of a panel we did years ago. Everything, everyone is you about screenwriting is wrong in which we go through all the advice you're given. Like for instance, write what you know

2:08.0

and we explain why that's just wrong. It's very freeing. I have to say, you come there and you get

2:15.0

liberated because if you're going and you're going to be at these panels, you're going to hear a lot of what you're supposed to do. And then you come to our panel and we set you free from all of it.

2:25.3

2:34.8

i will add one and a half glasses of wine i will have had a nap which will be great oh that's nice

2:39.3

yeah naps are not yeah saturday we have a script notes live three-page challenge at 445 pm And so when we do the live three-page challenge, the best part is the people come up on stage and we actually get to talk to them about their script and why they wrote it and what they're doing. And so we're probably a little bit nicer because the person is in the room. So much. So. Although I try to not be. Yeah. I really do. Try to be like, give them information that they need. Yeah. I mean, I'm personally nice, but yeah, I'm not going to hold back too much. So for the three-page challenge that's live at Austin, it's the normal link you submit your scripts. So john august.com slash three-page all spelled out. But there's a special tick box on there now saying,

So come join us at the Austin Film Festival if you get a chance to. We don't come every year, but we come most years and it's a good good fun time.
