Reality TV had been around long enough to have entered a sort of middle period.

But it started out as novelty competition shows like Survivor in 2000 and Fear Factor in 2001.

Had moved on to talent competitions like American Idol in 2002.

And into a genre that bore an eerie resemblance to the scripted dramas or comedies

that American audiences had long loved.

There was Laguna Beach in 2004 and it spun off the hills in 2006, both of which occupied the teen drama niche.

And audiences really went crazy for reality's version of sitcoms.

The Simple Life in 2003, The Girls Next Door in 2005, and the one that started it all,

The Osborns, which premiered in 2002.

Elliot Goldberg, co-creator of Keeping Up With The Kardashians,

told me that Ryan C. Crest Productions was looking for its own version of The Osborns to hand to E.

The now iconic Calabassus family seemed to fit the bill.

We need a family, thinking about the Osborns really, and thinking about how audacious that show was.

And if we could find a family that was, you know, outrageous and funny and real,

and then we could have a good chance.

Episode 1 of The Kardashians is a Rosetta Stone document with hints of all that is to come over the next 14 years.
