On June 24th, 1974, just a few weeks after his 21st birthday, David Berkowitz returned

to the Bronx following an honorable discharge from three years of active service in the

U.S. Army without any idea what he would do next.

I think for every soldier or sailor returning home after years away and it's a tough

reentry back to civilian life.

And the military things are all clearly defined.

The rules are very simple and known and you know how to act and what to expect from

other soldiers.

There's a defined pecking order and parameters that spell out what your duties are in every

situation including the chaos of combat.

Coming back out, it's sort of a controlled chaos, particularly if you don't have a family

that's established and able to help you through some reentry things because very few

people come out of the military and walk right the next day into a good, secure job and

relationship and that sort of thing.

After the army and all that and you were out on your own, did you try to mean people?

Did you try to find a girlfriend or companion?

Did you try to find male friends that you could sit around bullshitting?
