As soon as I step out of the car, I smell it.

A dewey aroma, reddulent of milkweed.

It seems to follow me wherever I go in Ithaca, New York.

This little city four hours northwest of Manhattan

at the foot of a finger lake.

The smell lurks in every breeze.

Even downtown, it snakes between the buildings

and clings to my coat.

I can never get it out of my hair.

Comparing it to milkweed probably makes it sound like
