I never really thought much about the locks on Grandpa's door.

0:05.0

They'd been there as long as I could remember.

0:08.0

Brass brackets fitted neatly into the doorframe,

0:11.0

old polished skeleton keys resting on a small dish by dad's spot at the dinner table.

0:17.0

To me, it was just part of our house, like the faded wallpaper in the hallway or the

0:22.7

humming radiator that never quite stopped rattling in winter.

0:33.7

and stand with a soft sigh.

0:36.6

He always thanked Mom for the meal,

0:38.5

patted Dad's shoulder as he passed,

0:54.3

Then he'd shuffle down the short hallway to his room,

0:57.8

slippers scuffing the hardwood with a rhythm I could hear even over the ticking kitchen clock.

1:04.2

Dad would stand and follow him, keys jingling in his palm.

1:09.0

Once Grandpa stepped inside, Dad would close the door and turn the lock twice

1:13.6

until it clicks solid. Sometimes he'd test the handle after, giving it a quick shake to make

1:19.8

sure it held firm. Then he'd sigh, took the keys back into his pocket, and we carry on cleaning up the plates and wiping down the

1:29.5

counters. No one talked about it. I never thought to ask why Grandpa's door needed a lock from the

1:38.8

outside, and they never offered an explanation. As a kid, I assumed it was a safety thing,

1:46.0

like those plastic outlet covers or cabinet locks to keep toddlers away from bleach bottles.
