0:22.2	is something along the lines of, hey, you know, David, things seem so terrible, things
0:27.9	seem so hopeless. I'm kind of fantasizing about just checking out, not paying attention
0:34.0	to news anymore, not paying attention to politics anymore, not voting, not engaging in
0:39.5	any way for the political system with the political system. And this isn't like an off-the-grid
0:45.2	checking out where you're going to live in the middle of nowhere and generating all your
0:49.8	own electricity and growing your own food. I'm not talking about that sort of checking
0:53.8	out. I'm basically saying, you're just not going to follow the Cummings and Goings of the
0:57.2	political system and news and the like of it. And you'll just engage with stuff that
1:00.4	you like, video games or sports or whatever the case may be, chopping wood, et cetera.
1:06.1	And often when this question is asked, we on the left, and sometimes on the right, but
1:11.6	today I'm talking as someone on the left to my colleagues on the left, sometimes we
1:17.1	on the left will respond with this super rigid and sanctimonious response that not only
1:22.1	does it make sense to stay involved, but it's the right thing to stay involved. It's virtuous
1:26.4	to be involved. Then you're sort of failing in some way. You're bad in some way. If
1:30.8	you choose to check out and stop paying attention and I don't think that's the right approach.
1:35.3	And to some degree, what makes sense really depends on the individual to just admonish
1:40.0	and criticize people in the sanctimonious way because they want to bail on what's going
1:44.7	on because it's so depressing or negative is actually not really something to be criticized.
1:48.8	It does depend on how you're affected emotionally and your day to day by following what's going
1:53.8	on in the news and the political system or not, where I want to be super clear is that whether
1:59.2	or not you pay attention, politics will affect you. What I mean by that is we shouldn't lie to
