Have you ever looked in the face of your own death?

I had that unfortunate experience several times.

I've determined it's happened to me because I enjoy the thrill of a solo adventure.

I love being alone, standing over a screaming waterfall, running through quiet woods, driving through open, desolate roads.

On the outskirts of this solitude are the predators.

They stalk alongside, watching us wanderers, fallik away from the herd, waiting to deliver death.

Adventurous women like me are particularly vulnerable, but also I believe are more aware when in the presence of danger.

Maybe it's primal, maybe the pheromones of a predator spiking our consciousness.

This is the story of my first solo adventure and my first rush with one such predator.

In the late summer before my freshman year of college, I got my driver's license in a shiny yellow Jeep Wrangler.

I was 17 and I loved that Jeep.

It was pure freedom.

I put the top down, smoked cigarettes, and hit the backcountry roads in Indiana.

I pretended I was some glamorous model that had gotten lost on her way back to California.

My parents had moved our family to Indiana the year prior and I just didn't fit in there.

I was a city girl. I wore the wrong clothes. I didn't listen to country music and I had a nasally northern accent.
